Gol Airlines to Launch Historic Rio-New York Direct Service This Summer
Brazilian airline Gol is set to make aviation history by introducing its inaugural direct flights between Rio de Janeiro and New York City, marking a significant expansion for the carrier into the North American market.
Starting July 8, the airline will operate nonstop service connecting Rio de Janeiro’s Galeao International Airport with John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The service will run three times weekly, with departures from JFK scheduled for Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, while return flights from Rio will operate on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
Fleet Transition Enables Long-Haul Expansion
The new route represents a strategic shift for Gol as it transitions from its traditional Boeing 737 fleet to wider-body Airbus A330 aircraft. Initially, the flights will be operated using Airbus A330s provided by Wamos Air, a partner airline within the same corporate family. Later in 2026, Gol will begin using its own fleet of five new A330-900 aircraft currently on order.
This fleet modernization is enabling Gol to pursue intercontinental routes for the first time, with plans to expand services to both European and North American destinations. Both Gol and Wamos Air operate under the umbrella of Abra Group, which also owns Colombian carrier Avianca.
Expanding Beyond Current U.S. Operations
Currently, Gol maintains limited U.S. service to Miami and Orlando using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. These existing routes operate from northern Brazilian cities that fall within the range limitations of the narrow-body planes, rather than from Brazil’s major metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
The new JFK service will feature Gol’s first business-class cabin, a significant upgrade from the airline’s current economy and premium economy offerings on its 737 fleet. The A330 aircraft will accommodate more than 290 passengers across multiple service classes.
Seasonal Competition in Key Market
The Rio-New York route currently sees seasonal service from major U.S. carriers American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, typically operating during the Northern Hemisphere’s winter months. Gol’s summer launch timing will position it as the sole operator on this route until the major carriers resume their seasonal schedules in late 2026.
Terminal arrangements at JFK have not yet been announced, though Gol could potentially utilize Terminal 4 alongside sister airline Avianca or Terminal 8 where partner American Airlines operates.
This route launch represents a milestone in Gol’s evolution from a domestic and regional carrier to an airline with intercontinental ambitions, leveraging its new wide-body fleet to connect Brazil’s second-largest city directly with North America’s busiest aviation market.
